Combining power, ease-of-use, ergonomic features and innovations designed for visibility, control and overall performance, the DEWALT DWP611PK compact router can handle a variety of applications--from small bevel cuts to large edge profiles and heavy flush trimming. This package comes with both fixed and plunge bases, but it's also available just with a fixed base.

Power and Performance

The DWP611 compact router features a 1-1/4 peak HP motor that delivers significantly more power than competitors' models to help you be as productive as possible. The variable speed control helps you to better manage the tool and determine the speed that is best suited for the application at hand. A low, contoured grip that is close to the work surface also contributes to an excellent level of control--providing both precision and productivity on the job site. The soft starting motor features full time electronic feedback that maintains motor speed through the cut. An adjustment ring enables controlled bit depth changes to within 1/64-inch.

Comfort and Convenience

The fixed base's dual LEDs and clear sub-base ensure maximum visibility in operation. The extended 1/4-inch router collet provides greater bit contact with the bit shaft than traditional routers, allowing you a firm grip on the bit and less vibration. The D-shaped sub-base provides stability and flatness when running edge profiles, and the spindle lock has been designed to greatly improve the ease of bit change by incorporating a large button that can be actuated with the same hand that stabilizes the router.

The plunge base features a clear and precise depth scale and marker, a release-to-lock lever to maintain the designated depth setting, and rubber handles for a non-slip grip. It delivers excellent user control via its smooth and light depth stroke, and the five-step adjustable turret stop enables stepped plunge cuts for accuracy and consistency.

The router also features two tabs that allow for a quick and simple base release, and a new base/adjustable clamp design so the motor location is maintained through the toughest applications.

Great small router March 21, 2011

I use this router in general wood working and guitar repairs. While it can not take a 1/2 shank bit, that is not relevant because it does not have the power to handle anything that large. Construction is very sturdy and yet somehow they kept the weight down. If you have to pick it up, make a cut, then put it down repeatedly, you soon come to appreciate the useful power combined with light weight. As a trim router and for small bits I don't think a better small router is available. For its intended purpose, this little guy is great. The threaded primary depth adjustment is the only way to build a useful router. Forget those routers with twist depth adjuster on the side. Those are a waste of money. (Proof is seen in the popularity and longevity of the Porter-Cable 690 series which have the best design.) The plunge accessory is excellent. The plunge controls are silky smooth and dead accurate. The micrometer depth stop limiter fine adjustment is especially helpful. This component threads onto the end of depth limiter rod. To control change depth of cut in tiny fractions you can rotate the adjuster up or down a tiny bit. Both router bases take "standard" porter cable style guides. Both bases are see through plastic. That is a very nice feature. I do have several high powered routers in my shop, but this router is a very welcome addition. It immediately became the shop favorite for a variety of tasks. I have already ordered a second kit. Well worth the money.

Being a Porter Cable shop when it comes to routers, I spotted this palm router to be far superior to the Bosch Colt that has been in the market for years and has a huge following. First of all as it has been mentioned, Dewalt's DWP611PK is designed after the PC 690 series routers - a very reliable method of setting the bit depth. You see this design in the fixed base and plunge base. The plunge base will except the STANDARD Porter Cable bushings and will also accept the router edge guide for the 690 Porter Cable. The LED lighting makes routing so much easier and should be on all routers in my opinion. Soft start and variable speed is a very nice touch and the horsepower (1.25HP) is the most on the market from a palm router. Both bases have a flat edge which works very well with routing dados with a straight edge.

I'm very happy with this router and if you are considering a palm router for your shop, get this one. Even if you don't think you'll use the plunge base, you will be glad that you have it and find that it's indispensable.

Better than the Bosch Colt May 7, 2011

With the Amazon price drop & DeWalt's current $30 rebate, I took the plunge (pun intended) on the DeWalt DWP611PK. I am *very* impressed!

I like my Bosch Colt routers a lot and use them often, but IMO the DeWalt is clearly superior (although durability is unknown). The after-rebate price seems very fair for all this functionality.

The only things that I prefer on the Colt are the:
1) Rubber grips (vs. the raised-dimple aluminum on the DeWalt). The Colt's grip is better when your hands get sweaty, and generally more comfortable.
2) Offset base which has come in handy a few times (no equivalent on the DeWalt)
3) Less-cheesy wrench (the DeWalt is flat stamped steel)
4) Hard case (the DeWalt comes with a canvas bag, but this is obviously personal preference) - see update below
Only the grip and offset base are significant to me. In every other respect (accuracy, flexibility, precision, ease-of-use) the DeWalt is better than the Colt.

Much of the dado-style & circle-cutting work that I do is with small bits where a 1/4" shaft works well (and a smaller/lighter router is easier to handle). But without a plunge base I was reluctant to use the Colt (I'm not comfortable plunging fixed-base routers...). The DeWalt plunge action is very smooth, and feels similar to my Bosch 1617 (but obviously with less tension). The plunge depth stop is just outstanding - very easy to adjust quickly, but also quite precise.

DeWalt obviously did their homework, and hopefully the DWP611 is reliable.... Read more ›
